Synopsis

The film surveys life in modern-day Communist China and contains newsreel footage dating back to 1949. Among the social and economic topics covered are industry, sports, drama, music, and education. The cities of Peking and Shanghai are spotlighted, where old slums are replaced with new facilities to create a better life for the workers. In rural China, farmers are shown living a happy life on the productive agricultural communes. There are also scenes of nomads and their camels crossing the snowy deserts of Mongolia. Another segment contains an interview with Premier Chou En-lai. The film ends with a 14-minute segment of the Peking Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Li Tehlun and featuring pianist Yin Chang-tuang, performing western music in their new concert hall.
