Synopsis

After years of arduous fighting in a Red Army cavalry unit during the Russian civil war, Trofim gains a renewed sense of warmth and humanity when his mare gives birth to a foal. He is ordered to destroy the newborn animal but cannot bring himself to carry out the order. The colt survives in the midst of battle and follows Trofim's unit. Losing its way, it strays behind enemy lines and nearly drowns as it tries to cross a river to reach its mother. Trofim rescues the colt but is mortally wounded as he reaches the riverbank. Before dying, he sees the colt rejoin its mother.
