Synopsis

Pai Su-chen, a goddess who is actually a 1,000-year-old white snake, falls in love with Hsü Hsien, a drug store clerk who saved her in a previous life. In gratitude for his deed, Pai takes the form of a lovely maiden and marries him; they live in harmony until a Buddhist monk tells Hsü that his wife is a spirit and gives him three amulets. Pai overcomes the amulets' powers, but one day Hsü sees her in the form of a white snake and dies of fright. Pai revives him with a red mushroom she has obtained from the Holy Land. The monk returns and forces Hsü to fly by magic to Mount Chin and plead with the god Fa-hai to allow the marriage of a mortal to a goddess. Fa-hai tries to kill Hsü by creating a flood, but he escapes; later Hsü dies in battle with Fa-hai and is joined in heaven by Pai.
