Synopsis

A prison bus transporting six convicted men is held up by gangsters who rescue Bart Rennison, one of the prisoners. The assailants bribe Ernie Peel, the bus driver, to detour to a deserted farm, and all the occupants are locked in a barn after being warned that the roof has been sprayed with a flammable substance which will be set afire if they attempt to escape before dawn. The gangsters shoot one of the prison guards and make off with Rennison, but they are later killed when their car crashes during a police chase. The prisoners spend a tense night in the barn, and to pass the time each recalls how he became a criminal, while outside and dangerously close to the barn, merrymakers celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by igniting rockets and fireworks. Martin Lord, convicted of manslaughter because he accidentally killed an intruder who attempted to rape his wife, and petty thief Doug Roberts escape through an opening in the barn to Lord's house nearby, but they decide to return and give themselves up. In the meantime, Victor Lush, a halfwitted sex offender, sets fire to the barn. Lord and Roberts arrive in time to save all the men except Lush, who perishes in the flames.
