Synopsis
After the death of her mother, Manuela von Mainhardis is sent to a prestigious girls' finishing school presided over by a stern and militaristic headmistress. The only kindness Manuela receives is from Fräulein von Bernburg, a teacher who takes a special interest in Manuela and tries to help her adjust to the strict new environment. Soon Manuela's feelings for her teacher turn to devotion, and following the school play, Manuela gets drunk and confesses her love. The outburst causes her classmates to shun her, and the headmistress confines Manuela to her room while planning to expel her. When Manuela learns that Fräulein von Bernburg has decided to resign because of the trouble, Manuela tries to commit suicide. She is finally released from her room at the request of a visiting duchess who had known her mother, and the headmistress decides not to expel her. Nevertheless, Fräulein von Bernburg decides to leave the school.
