Synopsis

Through intermediary Bayard Vance, courtesan Mayda St. Maurice supports her lawyer son Glenn Manley, who believes his parents to be dead. Years earlier, Mayda's husband Joe Brice had deserted her, and when she began earning a morally questionable living, she wanted Glenn to know nothing about it. Meanwhile, political boss Murdock Granby, Sr., to guarantee his continued influence, has his son Murdock, Jr. run for district attorney. Glenn runs against him, and in order to discredit him, the Granbys uncover information about his mother's identity. Glenn still wins, but he loses his sweetheart, Betty Howard, because of the scandal. While Murdock, Sr. arranges a recall, Bayard discovers that the boss is really Jim Brice. This news causes Mayda to suffer a fatal heart attack and ruins Murdock, Sr.'s political career, but also motivates Betty, now understanding the whole story, to return to Glenn.
