Synopsis

A massive prison riot in the Canal Zone leads to bloodshed as a group of convicts slaughter the guards and steal weapons from the armory. Led by Adriano, imprisoned for killing his wife, a band of prisoners escape in a boat, pursued by government forces. Adriano detours to a village to see his girl friend, but the pursuing captain is waiting for him. The troops kill some of the convicts, but Adriano flees into a jungle. The captain knows that Adriano cannot survive long, so he waits until the weak and feverish fugitive emerges and then recaptures him. [According to other sources, Adriano breaks out in order to see his son. When he finally reaches the boy, however, the frightened child does not recognize his father and is killed falling from a cliff. By the time Adriano is recaptured, he has gone mad.]
