Synopsis

Ma Benton slaves for her six children while her husband leads a shiftless life. Her son John is the black sheep of the family in whom only Ma and his sweetheart Isabella Strong have faith. Twenty years pass, and all of the Benton children have drifted away except John, who discovers that his father is implicated in a horse-stealing ring. Fearful that the knowledge of his father's involvement might kill his mother, John assumes the guilt for his father's misdeeds and is sent to prison. Once freed, John decides to travel West to make his fortune and sends money home to his brother Isaac for his mother's support, his father having since died. Isaac, however, appropriates the money for himself, and Ma seeks refuge in the poorhouse. John returns, punishes Isaac and restores the old homestead where he, Isabella and his mother reconstitute the family.

Notes

This film was copyrighted under this title and also under the title Over the Hill, apparently to prevent any infringement upon the poems on which it was based. Fox produced a film based on the same source in 1931 entitled Over the Hill, which was directed by Henry King and starred Mae Marsh and James Kirkwood.
