Synopsis

In southwest China during the Ming Dynasty, Madam Tung, the virtuous widow of an eminent scholar, is held in high regard by her neighbors. In fact, the townspeople petition the emperor to construct an arch celebrating her fidelity to her husband's memory. While the populace awaits the emperor's response, an army enters the village to protect the harvest from plunder. Although Madam Tung is strongly attracted to the captain, she masks her emotions, enabling Captain Yang and her daughter Wei-ling to court and marry. Madam Tung is left alone, and the arch is constructed.
