Synopsis

Laura, a prostitute in a dilapidated bordello, angers the madam by refusing to respond to the advances of those patrons who seek her favors. Laura eventually consents to take a customer, and during the lovemaking, she silently recalls her past: Laura lives with her aged parents who keep a store in a desolate part of the Pampas. A sheepherder comes to the store, and the pliant Laura is attracted to him by his sincere expressions of loneliness and desire. She steals some provisions and rides off with him to live in his shack in the mountains. The man spends much of his time looking for a place to dig a well. A fugitive horsethief is shot down near the shack and left for dead by the posse. Laura discovers that he is alive and sends him on his way with blankets and water, but the sheepherder tracks him with the intention of killing him. Laura convinces her husband, however, that the horsethief's life should be spared so that he can help with the well. Days pass, and the men dig a deep hole. The sheepherder discovers that the horsethief has a moneybelt and suggests to Laura that they steal the money, leave him in the well to die, and buy a farm. Laura has become attracted to the horsethief, who suggests to her in turn that they leave her husband in the well and go off together. Laura becomes numb with confusion and, unable to decide between the two men, leaves them both in the well to die. She then goes to the city where she becomes a prostitute.
