Synopsis

Hassan, son of the chief of the Badjao tribe of the South Seas, falls in love with Bala-amai, niece of the chief of the rival Moros. To marry Bala-amai, Hassan must abandon his pagan, sea-dwelling tribe and join the Islamic, land-dwelling Moros. In exchange for Bala-amai's hand, Hassan uses his pearl-diving skills to provide the tribe with valuable blue pearls. Soon after Bala-amai bears a child, however, Hassan quarrels with the Moro chief and refuses to dive for more pearls. The Moros burn down their house, and Hassan and Bala-amai flee to the Badjaos. There they are welcomed, and their child passes the test of surviving when thrown into the water and is declared a Badjao.
