Synopsis

New England farmers Martha and Jacob Landers' spoiled son Joseph is bored by rural life and so runs away to the city. To cover heavy debts that Joseph has incurred, Jacob mortgages the farm, then dies, leaving Martha penniless and unable to save their land from foreclosure. She writes to Joseph, now a prosperous businessman, but he ignores her letters. When she visits him, he sends her away, ashamed of her appeareance, and tells Elsie, the socialite with whom he is in love, that his mother is dead. Unknown to Joseph, Martha has become a cleaning woman in Joseph's office building, and is befriended by Elsie. One Christmas, after Joseph and Elsie are married, Martha becomes ill. Elsie visits her, and under the pretext of taking her for a drive, brings the old woman to her estate. Shocked by Martha's sudden appearance, Joseph exclaims, "Mother!" Elsie, now realizing her husband's deception, plans to leave him, but Martha intercedes and the family is reconciled.
