Synopsis
John Ruthford, an American Negro actor, arrives in Rome to star in a stage production of Othello and also to locate Sam, a Negro for whom John served a 7-year prison term in the United States for raping a white girl. John selects Anna Curti to play Desdemona, and during rehearsals, they fall in love. Alberto, Anna's dishonest manager who is also in love with her and is scheming to get her inheritance, tells her of John's prison record, and she abruptly ends their affair. When she eventually learns the truth, Alberto seeks out Sam and kills him before he can clear John's name. John attacks Alberto and then flees. Believing himself to be a murderer, he decides to commit suicide; but Anna finds him, tells him that Alberto is alive and in police custody, and convinces him of her love.
