Synopsis

In 1945, László, a young militant Hungarian, marries 17-year-old Judit, who has just been released from a concentration camp following World War II. Fortified by their love and a common desire to work for a better Hungary, their first few months together are happy ones. Then, László is arrested and sent to prison for holding political views different from those of the pro-Stalin regime. During her husband's confinement, Judit resumes a childhood friendship with Sándor Kocsis, a poet, and becomes his mistress. Four years later, when the Stalinist era ends and László is released, he and his wife discover that they have become emotional and political strangers. The estrangement continues until the social upheaval that brings about the revolution of 1956. When Russian tanks move into the country, Judit recalls that it was by this means that she was liberated from the prison camp years before. More understanding of László's belief in the Hungarian Communist experiment, she returns to him as the struggle for Hungarian unity continues.
