Synopsis

Fumiko Hayashi, born in 1904 as the daughter of peddlers, lives in poverty by the roadside. Her scanty education ends at age 11 when she is obliged to help her parents on a fulltime basis. Her parents' business declines, and she takes jobs as a factory worker, waitress, and barmaid. Her experiences with men are as varied as her jobs; some men treat her with kindness, others with disdain. Through all her hardships she writes an autobiographical novel which is published in 1928 and brings her instant notoriety. Her writings appear in newspapers and magazines until her death in 1951.
