Both Billy Crudup and Johnny Knoxville were expected to star in the lead role before both eventually dropped out. The role later went to Aaron Eckhart and finally to Dermot Mulroney. Peter Sarsgaard was previously attached to the role of Ben.

Bridget Moynahan, Donald Sutherland, Maura Tierney, Selma Blair, Blythe Danner and Steve Zahn were all previously attached to project.

Idiom Films & Entertainment, Quay Hays, and Jay Whitney Brown were previously attached to produce.

In early 2003 production was shut down when financing fell through a mere week before rehearsals. Bezucha and producer London then had to wait nearly a year for the screenplay's rights to revert back to them.
