Synopsis

Lida Baburova, a lecturer at the Museum of the History and Reconstruction of Moscow, lives with her father in an old, cramped apartment. One day they are delighted to learn that they are to receive a large new apartment in the housing development of Cheryomushki. Sergey, the chauffeur friend of Lida's admirer Boris, drives them to visit their new quarters. Another of the new tenants is Lyusya, a crane operator with whom Sergey has long been in love without daring to declare himself. Newlyweds Masha and Sasha also await the move eagerly. The tenants are forced to reckon with the hard-hearted superintendent Barabashkin, who holds them at his mercy and refuses to turn over the keys. When at last they are able to enter the new apartments, Lida and her father discover that Drebednev, a minor official, has been permitted by Barabashkin to expand his quarters to include the Baburovs' apartment. Lida and her father are helped by their friends to regain their rightful home; and Sergey's romance with Lyusya also prospers.
