Synopsis

Roy Hemmings, an American newspaper correspondent, is sent to Israel to report on the Arab-Israeli conflict, although he does not believe that a war will develop. Yehoram, a carefree chauffeur, escorts Roy and Eileen, his Israeli-born girl friend whom he later marries, around the countryside. Roy, who originally supported neither country, becomes sympathetic to the Israeli cause; he is impressed with the spirit of the people and especially with Raphi Cohen, a pilot who flew to Egypt to discuss a peace settlement with Nasser. Eileen, however, believes that Raphi is a fraud who is promoting the war. When war breaks out, Yehoram is ordered to report for military duty, and after rescuing a wounded soldier he becomes a hero. Although Raphi attempts to enlist, the war is over before he is admitted. Yehoram returns to his kibbutz and sees Roy walk into a field to retrieve a goat for some children and accidentally detonate a land mine. He is killed, and Eileen sadly returns to the United States with her husband's body.
