Synopsis
Under orders from Nazi General von Vogelbein, Colonel Max von Hildebrandt, accompanied by his secretary Ilsa Schneider, travels to France to expose a resistance leader. After taking up residence in a château, Max rapes and executes a suspect Frenchwoman and kills the priest who comes to her defense; is reunited with Count Henri de Prave, a German collaborator and master chess player; orders the Luftwaffe to destroy the village in retaliation for repeated sabotage attempts; and instructs his minion Erick to flog and torture three Frenchwomen. Discovering Ilsa and a partisan at a bistro, Max shoots his secretary, who dies proclaiming her Gestapo affiliation and absolute loyalty to General von Vogelbein. As she expires, Max is executed by Henri, who reveals himself to be a French loyalist.
