Synopsis
In a mountain forest in northeastern Argentina, José tends his ranch. [In the original version he is a woodcutter.] He meets Eva, a beautiful, mysterious woman from the nearby village, makes love with her near Iguaçu Falls, and is visited by her each weekend. Neither speaks of the past. During the week in town Eva works as a bar entertainer and prostitute; she has been the mistress of Simon, a hoodlum. José's son, Mario, returns after a long absence. [In the original José had deserted Mario and his mother.] Like his father, he falls in love with Eva, and she is attracted to both. José learns of the life she has led and becomes bitterly jealous when he discovers her relationship with his son. A fight between father and son ends when José holds an ax poised over Mario's head, then stops and comes to his senses. Believing that Eva loves Mario, José packs and prepares to leave the ranch to the two lovers. At the last moment, Eva reveals her love for José, and it is Mario who ventures from the mountain paradise.
