Synopsis

Tokichi Yamaki, the office manager of a large trading firm, enjoys a peaceful life with his wife, Nobuyo, and their youngest daughter, Keiko, whose three older sisters are married and who is herself engaged to Saburo, the son of her father's friend Suzuka. At a college reunion Yamaki argues with Suzuka over whether they should inform their ailing friend, Akiyama, that he has cancer. Yamaki now becomes aware that his own life has run much of its course. Kosuki, his younger brother, reveals he has embezzled 1 million yen from his company, and Yamaki sells his own stocks to raise the money and avoid a family scandal. With the money in his briefcase, Yamaki impulsively boards a train to Osaka. Notified of their father's disappearance, the daughters meet with their mother and admit that they are unconcerned about their father, except for their concern with what little money their parents have saved. In Osaka Yamaki mistakes a brothel for a hotel, only to take delight in his error. After ten days of comic adventures, he returns home to be greeted with new-found respect.
