Synopsis

The Rev. Mark Stebbing, a roughhewn, self-made man, vies for the affections of Margaret Wharton with Rev. Lionel Barmore, a polished aristocrat. When two pastorates become vacant, Stebbing volunteers for a poor parish while Barmore requests a fashionable one. Both men propose to Margaret on the same day, but she accepts Barmore when Stebbing crudely embraces her. Soon the bishop dies, and although both men are considered for the post, Stebbing declares Barmore the better man. Meanwhile, Gen. Henry Wharton, Margaret's wealthy father, has labor troubles at his plant. Stebbing initially dissuades his workers from violence, but when Wharton refuses to listen to their demands, they plot to blow up the plant, with Margaret locked inside the shed full of explosives. Braving the mob, Stebbing rescues Margaret, who decides to marry him even though Barmore becomes the bishop.
