Synopsis

Lindy, the wife of a black man whose death resulted from the cruelty of his employer, Colonel George Stilliter, kidnaps the colonel's daughter and with her own child, escapes to another part of the South. Fifteen years later, Belle lives in a small town with Lindy, and though the latter insists that she is her daughter, it is difficult for Belle to believe that she is black, and she rebels against the thought. Mulatto Ben Swift falls in love with Belle, but she loves Page Warren, a white man who hates blacks. Belle attempts to hide her origins from Page, but when he discovers that she is part black, he spurns her. Belle's instincts are finally proved correct when Lindy confesses that Belle is of white blood and the daughter of a distinguished man.
