Synopsis

In 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, Michel Georgenko, a Ukrainian idealist, enlists in the International Brigade in Perpignan. Soon afterwards, he meets American journalist Nathalie, and they fall in love. After their arrival in Barcelona, Michel leaves to join his unit on the front near the commune of Albacete. Nancini, a comrade, is mutilated by captors. Michel deserts and rejoins Nathalie when his comrades set out to execute a group of their own prisoners. They reach the French border but are captured by anarchists. Michel is shot and killed; Nathalie, detained nearby, hears the gunshots and screams out her love and despair.
