Synopsis
A sailing ship heads for the Portuguese colonies carrying a group of 100 women sentenced to deportation for theft, murder, and prostitution. Some of these hardened criminals bully Consuelo, an innocent young woman who has been falsely convicted of killing her illegitimate child. Da Silva, the corrupt lawyer who secured Consuelo's conviction, is haunted by this injustice. He stows away on the ship in an attempt to correct this wrong and thereby regain his dignity. Also on the ship is Isabella, the cousin of Consuelo, who allowed the innocent girl to be convicted of infanticide in her place. Isabella is traveling first class, having married an elderly gentleman of means. She allows her husband to die on the voyage so that she may inherit his property, and Da Silva and Consuelo publicly accuse Isabella of her crimes. Isabella responds by having the captain flog them together. Consuelo's cries stir the captive women to seize the ship. The rampaging women disfigure and then murder Isabella and the captain. A storm threatens the ship and the situation becomes desperate. The ship's cook remembers a prayer and the women turn their hopes to God, but only Consuelo and Da Silva escape the storm's fury.
