Synopsis

In the waning days of World War II, Captain Seki, an idealistic young officer, is assigned to a beleaguered garrison on the north China frontier. Eager to make good on his first command and ignoring the advice of experienced officers, Seki leads a platoon against the Chinese only to have his unit slaughtered and himself taken prisoner. Because he is the son of the division commander and may have gained knowledge of Chinese activities, a search for Seki is organized and a reward is offered. Byakko, the leader of a Chinese guerrilla band who prefer Japanese occupation to the Chinese Communists, offers to head the expedition, and he selects four soldiers about to undergo punishment for various crimes to accompany him. At the scene of the massacre, Byakko meets Muso, the head of Chinese intelligence, and while Byakko learns where Seki is being held, Muso is told of the reward. The two men race to recapture Seki, with Byakko's group winning. Returning to the garrison, Byakko finds Seki has already been reported dead, and Seki joins the guerrilla band as the war continues.
