Synopsis

To give his wife Catherine the comforts of life she demands, Alex, an alcoholic, writes crime novels and covers police stories as a reporter-photographer. Though Alex loves his neurotic wife with a morbid passion, his jealousy, as well as her boredom, drives Catherine to take a lover, playboy art collector Christian Lambert. In his dealings with the underworld, Lambert has threatened a murderer with blackmail, and when Lambert and his valet are murdered, the gangster becomes suspect. Inspector Roland, called in to investigate the case, concludes, however, that Alex was the murderer, motivated by revenge and intent on blaming the killing on his adulterous wife. Alex admits his crime and stumbles from a rooftop to his death as he tries to murder Catherine.
