Synopsis

The film is a compilation of clips, photographs, and newsreel excerpts depicting the early life of the Duke of Windsor. The Duke provided film from his private collection and also consented to appear in sequences filmed at his country residence at Gif-sur-Yvette, near Paris. Beginning with his early childhood as the great-grandson of Queen Victoria, the young Prince of Wales is seen at school, in training for the Royal Navy, and being coached for the responsibilities and duties of his royal position. Following clips of his tours as an ambassador for Britain, and his eventual ascension to the throne as Edward VIII, there are scenes of the Duke's meeting with Mrs. Wallis Warfield Simpson, their much publicized romance, and his ultimate decision in 1936 to renounce his throne and marry her. The Duke reads his abdication speech at the conclusion of the film.
