Synopsis

Mathilde has an affair with Dumesnil, her husband's best friend, and later becomes pregnant. When Dieudonne de la Graveries, her husband, finds out about Mathilde's infidelity, he leaves Paris for the South Sea Islands. In payment for her sin, Mathilde dies while giving birth to a girl, Therese. Dumesnil is killed in a fight, but as punishment for his sin of adultery, is reincarnated as a black dog. When Therese grows up, she repeats the mistakes of her mother by favoring Gratien, the scoundrel half of a pair of twin brothers. Pregnant, Therese contemplates suicide, but is saved by a black dog who leads Dieudonne, now retired and living in Paris, to her door. After coming to her senses, Therese spurns Gratien and marries Henri, his virtuous twin brother.
