Synopsis

British adventurer Stuart Northcote kills the president of a South American republic and then escapes to London pursued by a revenge-minded gang led by the dead man's daughter, Mercia Solano. Desperate to avoid the gang, Stuart pays the impoverished Jack Burton, who looks exactly like him, to take his place while he himself goes underground. Mercia catches up to Jack and falls in love with him when he explains the masquerade, after which she helps him fight off the rest of the gang. Mercia's former accomplices accuse her of a double-cross, and as a result, after learning of the disguise and then killing the real Stuart, they blame the murder on her and Jack. Just before they are hanged, however, one of the gang members confesses, and then, while Mercia and Jack are making plans for their marriage, they learn that Stuart left all of his sizable fortune to the man he hired to impersonate him.
