Synopsis

Fearful of losing his wagon building business, village president Simon Peter Martin opposes admitting the railroad into the town and votes accordingly in a referendum. In a surprise move, Myron Cooper, Simon's best friend and the local organ builder, decides in favor of the train, causing a serious rift in the relationship, which is heightened by the fact that Myron's niece is engaged to Simon's son. Furious at Myron, Simon berates his son for continuing his affair with the traitor's niece and refuses to see him. Despite Simon's lobbying, the town eventually votes in favor of the train, but as he receives a large sum of money for his land from the railroad company, Simon can find no reason to mourn and is reconciled with Myron, blessing the young couple as well.
