Synopsis

A London sales clerk, Thomas Webb, inherits from his uncle the valuable Moncton pendant and the noble title of Lord. In a crooked poker game, Webb's thieving friend Mason wins the rights to the title for a three-month period. As Webb and Mason confirm the details of the bet on a foggy street, Kitty Killigrew, an American heiress, is robbed of her imitation Moncton pendant by Mason's assistant. Kitty recalls only two details of the theft, a voice, Webb's, and a scar on the arm of the robber. The Killigrews, Webb and Mason, who is posing as Lord Moncton, end up on the same ocean liner bound for America. Mrs. Killigrew employs Webb as her secretary, while Mason attempts to seduce Kitty. Once on shore, Mason steals more jewels from the Killigrews, and Webb is accused of the crime. Kitty identifies Webb's voice but fails to find the accompanying scar. Now in love with Kitty, Webb confesses his secret to her, and she cleverly discovers a way to expose Mason not only as an impostor, but as the voice in the fog as well.
