Synopsis

Ned Lane, a paper mill worker in the Yukon, falls in love with a local girl, Mildred Hale, but soon discovers that she yearns for Frank Dawson, the rich mill owner's son. Because of Mildred's low social standing, Dawson senior forces Frank to terminate the union. To save her tainted honor, Ned marries Mildred, but after the elder Dawson dies, he nobly departs, knowing that she will never love him as she loves Frank. Believing that Ned is dead, Mildred marries Frank. After years of travel and hardship, Ned comes back to the Yukon where he makes a name for himself as a vigorous labor leader. His dedication to the workers' cause leads him to a showdown with the secret head of a prosperous paper mill, Frank Dawson. An intense encounter between Ned, Mildred and Frank ends with Ned's sacrificial suicide.
