Synopsis

Harold Gage is the bastard son of the aristocratic Constance whose fiancé died before their wedding. Her sister, Lady Stanton, insists that the child be raised in a foster home to avoid scandal. At the Marshalls, Harold is given a bad scar by his jealous foster brother, and is thus convinced to leave for Australia, where he becomes a notorious outlaw known as Captain Swift. He eventually decides to reform and sails to England under the name William Winding. As Winding, he saves James Seabrook's life and is welcomed into the Seabrook household, unaware that Constance Seabrook is his mother. He falls in love with Stella Darnisher, his cousin, but a series of complications ensues, involving the confrontation between Swift and young Marshall. In the end, Swift is killed by Marshall while trying to escape the authorities, but Marshall is slain by a police bullet intended for his foster brother.
