Synopsis
Dr. Manuel Ceneri, a nihilist living in London, steals his nephew Anthony March's inheritance. When Anthony becomes suspicious, Signor Macari, a fellow conspirator, suggests that they kill him. They commit the murder just as blind Gilbert Vaughan mistakenly enters the house. Anthony's sister Pauline faints and loses her memory, and Gilbert is returned home unconscious. Two years later, Gilbert's sight is restored and he travels to Venice where he falls in love with Pauline. He later sees her again in London, and they marry with Ceneri's permission. Macari is sent to Siberia after he is involved in a bomb plot in Russia, and Ceneri, hoping to blackmail Gilbert, lies to him, saying that he is Pauline's brother and that he killed her lover. This shock causes Pauline to go into a trance during which she enters the site of the murder. There she regains her memory, and Gilbert recognizes the darkly lit house. He chases Ceneri away, then goes to Siberia to extract a dying confession from Macari. Meanwhile, Ceneri threatens to kill Pauline, but Gilbert returns just in time with the police, who shoot Ceneri.
