Synopsis

Morton, a respected businessman, is induced by the corrupt Gittens to join him in a scheme to rob the poor by means of a fake business association which promises that "a small investment will start a beautiful home." Gittens arranges things so that when the crash comes, Morton is held responsible for the investors' losses while he himself reaps all the profits. Among the victims is Marie, engaged to marry the Reverend James Filikens. Gittens desires Marie, and by making it seem as if the minister has married another, almost succeeds in possessing her until she learns the truth. Marie, now fully aware of Gittens' deception, brings him to justice. Meanwhile, Morton, regenerated by his bitter experience, finds a way to compensate the investors for their losses. With justice done, the minister forgives Marie who then becomes mistress of the little parsonage.
