Synopsis

While horseback riding, Xenia Vaskova is accosted by Captain Kernova, an officer in the occupying Balkan army, and strikes his face with her riding whip. As revenge, the scarred captain pursues Xenia's father, who is the leader of a secret revolutionary movement. When Kernova secures proof of her father's activities, he offers to give Xenia the evidence in exchange for sex, but she tries to trick him and is raped as punishment. Exposed by Kernova, Xenia's father is executed, and Xenia moves North after Mirko, her son by Kernova, is born. Twenty years later, when war is declared again, Mirko joins the army and Xenia volunteers as a Red Cross nurse. One night at the front, Xenia tends to a wounded enemy general, who she discovers is Kernova. Overcoming her temptation to kill him, Xenia tells a now remorseful Kernova about Mirko. Later, Mirko arrives wounded and Kernova struggles to speak with him, but dies before he can ask for forgiveness. Mirko recovers and returns to live happily with his mother.
