Synopsis

Kathleen and her fellow factory workers are exploited by the Simpson Brothers and forced to labor long hours for little money. When Kathleen tries to protect a newcomer, she is fired from her job and blacklisted. Because of her unfortunate circumstances, she links fortunes with a crook, Red Palmer, and later is imprisoned for being his accomplice. While in jail, Kathleen drugs the warden and makes her escape, turning to a life of petty thievery. After hearing a church sermon on the virtues of mercy, Kathleen tries to steal the minister's watch. At first, the minister threatens to hand her over to the police, but finally forgives and falls in love with her. Kathleen and the minister marry and have a baby, at which time, Red Palmer surfaces to blackmail Kathleen and threaten the child. Forced to steal a diamond-encrusted cross to pay Red's ransom, Kathleen is followed by detectives and arrested. In the end, Red is mortally wounded and with his dying breath, confesses that Kathleen is innocent. Her name cleared, Kathleen reunites with her family.
