Synopsis

Mlle. Poppea, a dancer of the Imperial Ballet in India, is courted by Captain Drake and Prince Yar Khan of the Bengalese Dragoons. Although she loves Drake, she agrees to marry the wealthy prince, but her marriage never hinders her romance with Drake, who visits her regularly at the palace. Ordered to transfer, the prince takes Poppea to live in the South, a climate and culture she finds repulsive. Bored and disgusted with her devoted husband, she writes to Drake, begging him to visit. Feigning illness, Drake excuses himself from his military duties and travels to Poppea. The prince receives him warmly, and then by accident discovers the truth about the relationship. As revenge, he forces his wife to choose between two glasses of wine, one poisoned, the other not, and watches as Drake falls dead after drinking his glass. Devastated, Poppea flees into the desert.
