Synopsis

When Waldo von Kraft comes home from college, his sister Helena and her friends borrow a skeleton from a medical student and put it in Waldo's room. He loses his mind when he sees it and his hair turns white from fright. Waldo's father, the Baron, will not forgive Helena, who goes to live in a convent. When war is declared, the Baron joins his regiment. After the French violently take possession of the convent where Helena lives, the Germans battle to recapture it. The Baron exchanges uniforms with a captured French spy, and enters the convent to get important information. After a wounded French soldier sees Helena address her father, the Baron is captured. Helena, forced to take an oath on the cross, reluctantly reveals that her father is German. As the Baron is executed on the altar steps, Helena rushes to him and is shot also. Their spirits and those of other dead soldiers rise and appeal to the Prince of Peace to end the war.
