Synopsis

Howard Sherbrooke and Dick Leslie, seniors in law school, are both in love with Ethel Stratton. Preferring the wealthy Howard, Ethel accepts his proposal, unaware of Mr. Sherbrooke's plans to marry his son into a prosperous family. Because he owes Howard tuition money, Dick agrees to aid his schoolmate in a mock marriage ceremony. On the day of the wedding, however, Dick changes his mind and delivers an authentic minister to perform the rites. Months later, Mr. Sherbrooke arranges for Howard's wedding with Beatrice Ford, and Howard, believing that he is not legally married, deserts Ethel. Devastated, a pregnant Ethel upbraids Dick for his supposed part in the deed, but after he tells her the truth, she rushes to the church in hopes of stopping the unlawful union. Arriving too late, Ethel then goes with Dick to the Sherbrooke home where Dick reveals to the new father-in-law his friend's crime. Mr. Sherbrooke denounces Howard as a bigamist and threatens him with prison. Faced with the possibility of jail, Howard commits suicide and Dick marries Ethel.
