Synopsis

When Count Borris, the son of the Governor General of Kiev, saves a Jewish woman from the insults of a drunken officer, in retaliation the officer orchestrates the arrest of the woman's father and brother Ossip on charges of treason. In order to save Ossip, who is a Nihilist, the father confesses to the crime, and his son is freed, after which the father is sent to Siberia. When the Governor General learns of Borris' infatuation with the Jewish woman, he angrily tears the insignia from his son's uniform. Borris then joins the Nihilists and after attempting to assassinate the Minister of the Interior, he frees the innkeeper and with his future wife and in-laws, boards a ship bound for America.
