Synopsis

A portrayal of the life of Martin Luther in the context of "a need for someone to return the church to God." The story begins with the birth of Luther and follows his boyhood, student days and life as a monk. There are scenes of Johann Tetzel selling indulgences, Luther nailing his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg church, various defenses of his doctrines, and his confinement at Warburg. Luther returns to Wittenberg, and later Magdelana ( i.e., Katharina von Bora) leaves the convent to marry him. The picture closes with a Christmas scene of Luther, his wife and children, and "a mass of people leaning towards him with outstretched arms." (Copyright records.)
