Synopsis

Jacob Spraggins, a Jewish self-made multi-millionaire, donates to charities to relieve his troubled conscience. When these institutions treat him coldly and continually ask for more, Jacob hires a detective to find the heir of the man he long ago swindled out of property worth ten thousand dollars, so that he can right the wrong. Meanwhile, Jacob's daughter Celia, whose passion for whistling has not been appreciated in her father's financial class, falls in love with the whistling grocery delivery boy, Thomas McLeod, who is the grandson of the man Jacob wronged. Clothed in her housemaid's cap and apron, Celia courts Thomas and wins his love. After Jacob's detective locates Thomas, Jacob, admiring Thomas' independence, gives him ten thousand dollars and hints that he might want to marry his daughter. Thomas refuses to meet her, but takes the money and elopes with Celia. When Jacob learns this, he pursues them to give his blessing. A year later, Jacob cancels his contributions to charity and raises the price of vinegar three cents per gallon so that his grandson will have all the money he wants.
