Synopsis

Exiled from Russia, nobleman Paul Dimitri comes to New York, opens a book store, and raises his daughter Sonia without telling her about her royal heritage. Paul's employee, David Tryne, a hunchback, falls in love with Sonia and, after Paul dies, does his best to end her engagement to Schuyler. To effect a breakup, David spreads the rumor that Sonia was born out of wedlock, even though he knows about her ancestry. Schuyler nevertheless reasserts his eagerness to marry her, but Sonia feels herself unworthy of him, and ends their romance. Then, however, tormented by his actions, David impulsively reveals the truth about Sonia, after which she and Schuyler are married.
