Synopsis

Explorer Earl Rossman travels to the Arctic. According to the film, the Alaskan salmon canning business annually provides over $7,000,000 in profits, which is over twice the sum paid to Russia for the area. Footage includes scenes of salmon fishing, glaciers breaking up and harpooning of whales and Walrus Island, which is said to be the home of the widest variety of birds in the North. A single Eskimo builds an igloo as protection from a snowstorm, which hides his sled with snow. The Eskimo is only able to locate two of his reindeer, and he uses one as food, eating the flesh raw. In order to travel home, he skins the reindeer and freezes its hide, using it as a sled which he attaches to the surviving reindeer with strips of skin. The Eskimo later participates in a reindeer roundup, in which the animals are herded into an area bounded by fences made of ice. After selection of the best reindeer, the rest are released. In addition, Rossman charters a plane in Fairbanks, Alaska, and flies over Mt. McKinley.
