Theatrical release of The Three-D Follies as a feature-length film, or as a series of shorts, has not been confirmed. News items for the film variously referred to the title as Three-D Follies, 3D Follies and 3-D Follies. According to a March 9, 1953 Hollywood Reporter news item, the film was slated to be the first 3-D color musical, to be distributed in May 1953 by RKO, at a length of 90 minutes. However, according to a May 6, 1953 Variety news item, producer Sol Lesser discontinued shooting after he was unable to secure Milton Berle to perform as the emcee for the variety picture, which was to comprise six twenty-minute segments.
News items record the titles of the six segments that were filmed: "Carmenesque," starring Lili St. Cyr; "Caribbean Nights," "Underwater Adventure," to be shot in Florida; "Polly Wolly Doodle," a comedy sequence; "Acrobatika" or "Akrobaticks," directed by William Cameron Menzies at RKO-Pathé Studios, and featuring acrobatics in a Paris, France, setting; and "Fun in the Sun," also directed by Menzies and featuring prominent athletes. Menzies' segments were filmed on location in Palm Springs, CA, beginning on February 24, 1953, according to a Daily Variety news item of the same date. A September 16, 1953 Variety news item reported that all six segments were completed and were available as shorts for exhibition in either 2D or 3D. However, as noted above, the final outcome of the film's distribution has not been determined, as no reviews or release dates have been located.
