Synopsis

In Arkansas, an elderly writer who comes upon a young brother and sister rehearsing a melodrama, thinks that the girl is in danger and rescues her. Later, the children introduce the writer to their older brother, a farmer who gives the man a job in exchange for room and board. The writer convinces the older brother that his farm needs improvements, but his mother will not give him money from his father's life insurance. The older brother goes to the state capital to ask the governor to invest in the area, and soon new roads and electrical power are being installed. The brother's sweetheart loves him but must care for her father and her siblings. One of her brothers is in love with the girl's rival for the older brother's affections, but the rival turns him down. When the rival's father gives the older brother a loan, the rival's brother steals the money and hides out. He is later thrown from his horse and killed. When the sweetheart and the older brother finally get together, the writer moves on knowing that everything will now be all right.
