Synopsis

Four sons and one daughter are left alone after their parents' death: Taro, the eldest son, a construction worker; Jiro, the second eldest son, a truckdriver; Saburo, the third son, a university student; Orie, the daughter; and Suekichi, the youngest boy, who is preparing to enter the university. Taro postpones his marriage to care for his brothers and sister and finds himself quarreling frequently with his brothers. Orie leaves home for a while, disgusted with her brothers' bickering, but she soon returns when she realizes that no one has an easy life. In the spring, Suekichi fails his entrance examination for the university, but his brothers and sister console him and determine to face the future courageously.
