Synopsis
Bridget Monaghan, a dressmaker, is the mother of six illegitimate children and an embarrassment to the small Irish farming district where she lives. Provoked by his wife into doing something about Bridget, William Bates, the father of Bridget's twins, calls a meeting of the other fathers of the village who were Bridget's lovers: Jamesy Casey, father of Tommy, Bridget's eldest son; Matthew, whose daughter Poppy is the film-struck beauty of the family; and Jim Power, father of Toughy, the youngest of Bridget's children. First they try to have the children removed from Bridget's care by a magistrate, but she is proved to be a fine mother. Then they decide to buy Bridget a farm and install the family away from the village where they will no longer be an embarrassment. The farm is bought, and Bridget is informed that she must move. Then things start going wrong: Mrs. Power, unable to have children of her own, asks to adopt Toughy. Refusing at first, Bridget later consents when she sees that the young couple love the child. Then Poppy leaves for London with a movie contract, and Mary, Bridget's eldest daughter, becomes engaged to artist Peter Howard. Jamesy Casey, the only bachelor in the group, discovers that he has grown fond of his son Tommy, who is working for him on his derelict farm, and he devises a plan for helping Bridget and the worried fathers and, at the same time, improving his own lot. He proposes marriage to Bridget; she accepts, and together they start life anew on the prosperous little farm.
